Methods of Establishing Wildflowers on Missouri Highway Rights-of-Way. Native Plants on Missouri Highway Roadsides: The Effects of Mulch, Herbicides, Competition and Other Factors
This document consists of two separate reports by the same authors. The first report, Methods of Establishing Wildflowers on Missouri Highway Rights-of-Way, is a manual whose purpose is to provide a simple but detailed guide explaining how to establish wildflowers on highway right-of-way turf. While it's intended application is for previously constructed highways that have an established turf, much of its contents can be applied to new construction sites as well. The state of the art is constantly changing as more information on the subject accumulates. Therefore, it is suggested that this booklet be reviewed and revised periodically. The second report, Native Plants on Missouri Highway Roadsides: The Effects of Mulch, Herbicides, Competition and Other Factors, documents a three-year project with the objective of learning as much as possible about how site characteristics, mulch types, tillage types, and as many other factors as possible affected as many native species as possible. The native species were chosen with an attempt to provide as colorful a population as possible, to provide something in bloom throughout the growing season, and to use plants which were felt to have a good chance of success while not having the potential for becoming nuisance problems.
