Revealing route bias in air transport data: The case of the Bureau of Transport Statistics (BTS), Origin-Destination Survey (DB1B)
This article examines the biases in the Bureau of Transport Statistics (BTS) Origin-Destination Survey (DB1B). A major challenge in air transportation research is the uneven availability and formatting of data. Data sources for researchers are limited, and many of those that exist are inaccessible to many researchers. Many routes in DB1B could not be accounted for. The authors present an algorithm to identify potentially biased routes. Further research could focus on the nature of biases in the database.
