A PILOT PLANT FOR SOLID TRANSPORTATION STUDIES

The hydraulic transportation of solids in pipelines involves many problems. The non-Newtonian flow characteristics are not known with sufficient accuracy allowing for a fine design of long-distance pipeline. The experimental plant presented in this paper includes a laboratory and a testing bench of 3 loops with diameters of 2, 4 and 8 inches respectively. The test-loops are fully equipped with instrumentation for pressure, head losses, flow rate, concentration measurements and for tests of any solid product transportation. The three test-loops can be used independently and tests with different diameters of pipe can lead to a good approach of similitude laws. Tests of equipment such as valves, pumps, flowmeter, concentration meter etc., can be carried out with this installation. Some results of high concentration transportation of some materials, paper pulp, coal, iron-ore are presented.
