THE SPATIAL SOLID CONCENTRATION AND THE CRITICAL VELOCITY
An equation for predicting the mean spatial solid concentration in a horizontal pipe has been derived and the unknown parameter in it was determined by the analysis of the experimental data. The solid concentration ratio, g/C, or the ratio of the spatial solid concentration, q, to the delivered one, C, is considered with respect to the flow parameter, psi equals (V squared/gD(s-1)) x square root (C sub d). Both calculated and experimental values of q/C increased conspicuously in the range of psi less than, approximately, 3. This means that in this range of flow the stationary bed begins to form. Two head loss equations including the spatial solid concentration instead of the delivered one were given for the separate range of psi, or psi less than and greater than 3. By differentiating the head loss equation, the critical velocity that corresponds to a minimum head loss point was discussed and compared with other proposals.
