Paris Metropolitan Transport Plan
The Paris metropolitan area grossly covers the same area as the administrative region of Île-de-France (it even overflows into neighbouring regions). The Île-de-France region land area spans over 12,000 km2, its population is 11.7 million inhabitants (18% of the national population), and its GDP is 28% of the national GDP and fifth among world metropolises. Most of the population is located in the central urban area. Such a high concentration of people and activities raises a number of transport related issues. First, everyday transport operation is a daily challenge. Second, long term planning for better future transport conditions is highly necessary. Within the transport systems, the public transport system plays a key role to tackle the volume of travel. We shall examine the regional transport organization, the public transport supply and demand mismatch, and the projects for improving the system.
