EYE MOVEMENTS OF DRIVERS IN URBAN TRAFFIC
The present investigation was related to the question of qualitative judgement patterns observed in drivers in urban traffic and the interaction between eye movement patterns and traffic environment. Five drivers were driving A stretch, in both directions, of a four lane and a two lane street in an urban setting. Simultaneously registrations with eye mark recordings (a nac-camera of corneal reflection type) and registrations of the traffic environment by camera pictures were made. The eye fixations were classified according to the type of objects the drivers were looking at. This method had the advantage that it also allowed for registrations of the occurrence of objects in the environment that the drivers were not looking at. A qualitative judgement of eye movements was facilitated using this registration technique and differences were found mainly to the extent attention was paid to pedestrians. More attention was paid to pedestrians in the two lane street than in the four lane street. (TRRL)
