SOME OBSERVATIONS REGARDING THE INFLUENCE OF THE MICROSTRUCTURE ON THE CORROSION RESISTANCE OF THE HEAT AFFECTED ZONES OF WELDS IN UNALLOYED AND MANGANESE ALLOYED STEELS

The influence of the composition of the microstructure on the corrosion resistance to seawater of the heat affected zones (HAZ) of welds in unalloyed and manganese alloyed steels has been studied. The results obtained seem to indicate that the amount of high carbon untempered martensite and retained austenite in the HAZs of welds can contribute to or possibly cause relatively rapid corrosive attack in moving seawater.
