EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF VAPOR EXPLOSIONS

Explosions of LNG in water are identified as vapor explosions, and the available information on vapor explosions is reviewed with emphasis on methods for evaluating the destructive kinetic energy release from a specified accident. A theoretical method of calculating the maximum destructive energy is evaluated on the basis of measured values for medium size interactions on the order of 50 kg of hot liquid. Extrapolation of this theoretical approach to large size interactions predicts very large shock wave energies. Practical considerations which may reduce the actual shock wave energy below that predicted are mentioned.
