REVIEW OF THE OCCUPATION OF SEAMEN IN JAPAN
This article presents a basic framework for studying the following questions: (a) in what direction is the occupational environment for seamen likely to change; and (b) how should the occupation of seamen be reorganized in order to adjust itself to the new conditions? The article discusses the changes in the occupational environment of Japanese society in general and briefly examines the occupation of Japanese seamen; change of management environment for the shipping industry, change of seamen's consciousness and conduct, role and evaluation of seamen's position in the shipping industry, and review of seamen's working life, his tasks, organization and culture on board ship.
