EXPERIENCES WITH LOW COST ROAD PAINTS FOR LIGHTLY TRAFFICKED SPRAY SEALED ROADS
This paper is issued as technical note no 1. Most pavement markings in Queensland involve the use of paint. Considering longitudinal markings, paint costs were 70 per cent of total marking costs for the state as a whole. To reduce the cost of road markings, it was suggested that low cost paints should be investigated. Preliminary trials were carried out and a readily available water emulsion paint was applied to a section of newly sealed highway. In view of the satisfactory performance of the paint, further trials were carried out. Five paints were selected and applied to five consecutive sections of recently resealed highway. The test sections were assessed according to durability, colour and bead retention and were appraised after three and six months. Performance was generally good. Wider use of low cost paints is currently being made in Queensland (A). (TRRL)
