SELECTION OF SKID RESISTANT AGGREGATES BY PETROLOGICAL METHODS
This paper was presented at 4th Australian Geological Convention, Hobart, January 1980. The paper outlines the methods of testing for frictional chracteristics which have been used in Australia and discusses their relevance to the selection of surfacing aggregate. Procedures for the prediction of the frictional chracteristics from a combination of simple tests and the examination of thin sections is discussed. Hardness of constituent mineral and the surface texture of the rock particle are shown to be important in predicting frictional characteristics. Surface texture is affected by three factors: (I) friability of the rock; (II) vesicularity; and (III) the degree of differential wear or weathering of constitutent minerals. (Author/TRRL)
