A REPORT ON LNG SAFETY RESEARCH--2

A report on LNG safety research--2, prepared by Arthur D. Little Inc., covers the possible hazards of an accidental LNG spill and of the generated vapor cloud, especially fire and explosion. Data on LNG explosions distinguish between the combustion explosion resulting from ignition and the noncombustion "explosion" observed when LNG is spilled in water. The latter is not well understood and requires additional study. Passive methods for alleviating hazards of vapor plume and unignited flammable mixtures include the use of safe exclusion distances, optimum dike dimensions (small dike area and high wall), tree screens, permanent walls downwind, insulation, and sloping of dike floor.
