CURRENT-INDUCED BENDING MOMENTS IN LAYING OFFSHORE PIPELINE
In a theoretical study on the effects of hydrodynamic forces on that portion of a pipeline which hangs unsupported between the ocean bottom and the point of contact with a straight stinger of known slope, approximate solutions were obtained for the deflection equations by neglecting the component of current velocity in the pipelaying plan for the cases in which the pipe undergoes small deflections and for cases with and without applied tension. The maximum bending moments obtained from the approximate solution were compared with the maximum bending moments obtained by numerical integration of the deflection equations and with the maximum bending moments obtained by neglecting the hydrodynamic forces altogether.
