Geotechnical aspects and monitoring of ground treatment for Nundah Creek bridge approach embankments
This paper summarises the geotechnical aspects of the approach embankment ground treatment design and construction for the Nundah Creek bridge widenings. The existing approach embankments are about 2 m high and were widened and raised to 3 m high in 2016-2017 as part of the Gateway Motorway upgrade. Subsurface conditions consist of soft, compressible soils up to 4 m depth. The main challenges arising from the geotechnical conditions are settlement and stability. Several ground improvement techniques have been employed, which included remove and replace, preloading, surcharging and high-strength geotextile reinforcement of embankments as well as utilising the improved ground characteristics from in situ stone columns supporting the original embankments constructed in the 1980s and 1990s. The design was informed by the observed performance of Early Works preload embankments which were instrumented with settlement plates, inclinometers and vibrating wire piezometers and constructed nine months ahead of the main package of work. The design methodologies are described, as well as prediction versus performance and comparisons of performance with historical observations from the original embankment design.
