Geotechnical investigation and design of aerodrome pavements in saline and expansive subgrade conditions in South Australia

This paper presents a case study on the geotechnical investigation and pavement design for a remote aerodrome for jet aircraft operation in central South Australia. Geotechnical investigations included extensive test pit excavation and laboratory testing. Through extensive value engineering, locally available material was obtained by optimising earthworks levels and cuts in rock to provide a subgrade improvement layer on the reactive subgrade. Pavement thickness design was carried out using the elastic layer analysis method. Specifications and pavement thicknesses were risk assessed and adapted to meet the available materials. Sprayed bituminous surfacing comprised prime followed by application of a single/single seal using conventional bitumen and microsurfacing. Schedule of construction was planned to reduce risk of damage to pavements due to sanity in subgrade layers. Geotechnical investigation, concept of upward movement of salt in unsaturated environment, design of pavements and bituminous surfacing has been described in detail in this paper.
