AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ANALYTICAL DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS

This book is a simplified introduction to the analytically based method of designing pavements. Emphasis is placed on the solving of problems by calculation. The details refer to pavements with bituminous bound bases; the use of granular material is restricted to 200 mm sub-bases; loading is by use of the standard wheel concept of 40 kn. The author deals in turn with: bituminous materials (mix proportions, bitumen stiffness, mix stiffness, fatigue strength, typical mixes, mix design); soils and granular materials; structural analysis; design process (general procedure, average temperature, traffic, detailed procedure, worked examples, summary of main equations, comparison with current design method); balanced design (design procedure, final design, worked examples, summary of main equations); pavement assessment (detailed procedures, worked examples, summary of main equations).
