SHIP SEWAGE TREATMENT AND HOLDING SYSTEMS

The paper stresses the damaging effect upon harbors, docks and inland waterways of excessive or continuing pollution loads and refers to the growing endorsement of the view that pollution is a global, as distinct from a purely national, problem. The different standards which are proposed, or applied, in various countries are compared and means are suggested by which shipowners can protect themselves against infringement of whatever standards are applied in the waters in which they operate. The review of the various marine sewage treatment systems includes performance data, where available, and each plant is considered in the light of the known legislative trends.
