Some thoughts on mixing steel and timber sleepers
In considering the economics of using an alternative to the timber sleeper there are a series of influencing factors not the least of which may be the budgetry constraints on total replacement of sleepers on a face. In many cases the achievement of the economic goals may not rely per se on total replacement in the first place. One can visualise the transition from one type of sleeper to another over a period of years, the control of gauge spreading in sharp curves and the reinforcing of weak track by interlacing of new sleepers between weaker ones. These are the very processes that are daily taking place in the maintenance of any track with a single type of sleeper.
