Turnout manufacture - the mystery exposed
Most track staff wouldn't give a broken dog spike to find out how turnouts are manufactured - just as long as they turn up complete, on time and at the right spot. In fact, the mysteries of workshops are probably most remembered from Tech. and Uni. days as some vague subject like Workshop Technology, in which most of the time was spent dozing off. Either that, or remembered as fleeting contact by track staff with a remote voice over the phone from the workshops explaining why some one else’s urgent request for an emergency replacement of a special double slip with a-half-pike-and-double-backward-somesault has meant your own ridiculous request for an emergency replacement of a standard 1095 crossing has been delayed well into the next century. Or perhaps, "Dogspikes? Nah, none of those around, mate." But, mindful of the educative role of the PWI, and the ignorance of most track staff of the subtleties of mechanical engineering, you're about to find out more about how turnouts are actually made.
