Ashfield Junction: stage 1

Ashfield Junction Stage 1 consists of eight new crossovers in parallel ladder formation between Summer Hill Station and the Liverpool Road overbridge. This formation consists of 16 single turnouts 12 of which are standard 1 in 10% crossings and 4 of which are specially designed. All the turnouts were pandrol plated with the 12 standard turnouts having rail bound manganese crossings. The tracks involved were the Up and Down Mains, Up and Down Suburbans and the Up and Down Locals between Summer Hill station and Ashfield Station. Each of the 10 weekend possessions given, involved a pair of up and down tracks for a period of 36 consecutive hours. Of the two tracks involved, one track was kept for the. movement of two work trains and the tamping machine used in the possession. The first worktrain was used for the removal of trackwork and the fouled subgrade, while the second worktrain was for bringing in of the new leads and the BBWs of metal. The project can be best understood by dividing it into eight convenient sections.
