Australianisation of track standards
Track Standards are an integral part of the new set of Australian Standards AS 4292 and ARA Code of Practice for Track and Civil Engineering covering the Railway Industry. (Of these only AS 4292 Part 1 has been issue to date). The intention of this paper is to: introduce the concept of track standards that apply across Australia; explain how they will affect organisations and individuals; and show how they were developed with particular reference to Track Geometry Standards (the topic of my Working Party). The paper will focus on the development of standards from the perspective of a working party member (which is the equivalent of the ''coal face" in the development hierarchy). This approach has been taken to give a better understanding of the standards, their strengths and limitations and the Australia wide context from which they have evolved.
