Comparison of Superpave Gyratory Compactor and Impact Hammer for Compaction of Unbound Granular Materials
This study investigates the effects of gyratory compaction of unbound granular materials through an experimental program, and explore if the impact and gyratory compaction are similar in the results. Gyratory compaction can be used as an alternative to impact compaction, avoiding downsides such as inconsistent strength and layer interface barriers. The results of compaction with a Superpave gyratory compactor and an impact hammer compactor were compared. The results indicated that gyratory compression may improve compressive strength.
