THE PERFORMANCE OF ROLLED ASPHALT ROAD SURFACINGS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE CONFERENCE HELD IN LONDON 16 OCTOBER, 1979

Three particular and controversial problems arising from the use of rolled asphalt for road surfacings are discussed in these proceedings. Slippage of wearing courses over base courses is attributed to both poor wet-mix bases and the temperature conditions for mixing and laying the asphalt. The development of permanent deformation under heavy traffic has focused attention on improved methods of mix design and the importance of compaction. The Marshall test is discussed in detail and shown to be a useful tool if care is taken with test technique. Requirements for adequate texture depth to provide high speed skid resistance can be achieved, but there is not universal agreement over the texture depth required or the best methods for measuring skid resistance at high speeds. The following papers were presented: the incidence and investigation of slippage failures (Peattie, KR); asphalt slippage: a highway authority viewpoint (Cox, NE); experimental studies of slippage, (Kennedy, CK and Lister, NW); assessing the resistance to rutting of rolled asphalt (Hills, KF); rolled asphalt wearing courses with high resistance to deformation (Szatkowski, WS); designing rolled asphalt wearing courses to resist deformation (Knight, VA, Dowdeswell, DA and Brien, D); skidding resistance standards for trunk roads in England (Carroll, TJ); problems of implementing a skid resistance policy (Bullett, AW and Garrett, C); the specified surface: some factors influencing its production (Rayner, GJ).
