Running like clockwork: how Zürich’s trams keep to time
The Swiss are known for their punctuality and reliability. So it comes as no surprise that when you visit Zürich, the largest city in Switzerland, public transport seems to run like clockwork. Surprisingly, despite operating in streets that are known to be some of Europe’s most congested, Zürich public transport has managed to increase their on-time reliability from an already astounding 84% in 2013 to 87% in 2016. Effective incident planning and a reliance on experienced staff are two contributing factors. Zürich can be justifiably proud of the service they deliver. So, how have they been able to achieve this reliability and what does this mean for passengers?
