The International Blockchain Registry of Mobile Assets
This article proposes the use of an international blockchain registry of mobile assets to better support the authentication for the International Registry (IR). The IR, established by the Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment, Cape Town (2001), supports the efficient financing and leasing of mobile equipment including certain aircraft, rail, and space assets. Current, the IR can be searched online by those seeking current registrations, entities, or contracting States. Entities wishing to register on the IR must apply to the website. The author of this article proposes the use of a blockchain registry system, specifically a “permissioned” variant of the Etherum blockchain that uses a non-fungible ERC721 standard to digitally tokenize each registered asset. This approach would support a more efficient, error-resistant, and secure mechanism of authentication and registry for the IR. The author assures readers that this strategy would not affect the Supervisory Authority’s approval process or confidentiality protocols.
