APPLICATION OF FRACTURE MECHANICS TO WELD QUALITY CONTROL
Comparison of the weld defect criteria as presented in current fusion welding process specifications with defect tolerances based on fracture mechanics criteria. Through the application of the latter a systematic approach to weld quality control is developed which could be applied to many fusion welding applications. It permits one to relate the weld quality to the materials inherent properties and design application and defines standards applicable to most materials and welding processes. Use of a fracture mechanics derived weld quality control program should permit better control of weld quality and costs than is practical with current specifications.
