EVALUATION OF VARIOUS TYPES OF NOZZLE PROPELLERS AND REACTION FIN AS THE DEVICE FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF PROPULSIVE PERFORMANCE OF HIGH BLOCK COEFFICIENT SHIPS
Improvement of propulsive performance of ships has been considered to be one of the most effective items for power saving. In addition to the ceaseless effort to design hull forms with better performance, various types of propulsion device retrofitted to the existing ship have been considered to have promising improvement of ship propulsive performance. In the present study carried out in Nagasaki Experimental Tank, experiments were made for VLCC models, of different shape of after body with some kinds of propulsion device, namely nozzle propellers including modifications and a reaction fin. Quantitative evaluations of each device with respect to propulsive performance were made. As a result it was found that the reaction fin is the most effective device among the retrofitting devices examined.
