ON THE ANALYSIS OF THE CIRCLE TEST
The speed reduction in turning has heretofore been expressed by the ratio between diameter and ship length or by coefficient K sub S used in Hovgaard's formula. The author showed in (Part-1) the results of turning tests on actual ships by these expressions applied to various hull forms, deducing K sub S to the ratio between the rudder area and the lateral area under water. In this connection there is a method to calculate the speed reduction from the curve of E.H.P. in turning. This paper shows that the speed reduction in turning may be analyzed not only by the increase in E.H.P. but by the incidental change in propulsive quality and engine character with actual ship data analyzed.
