PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF ELASTOMERIC BODY SEALERS IN AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATION
Evolutionary changes in automotive body sealing are traced from the 1920's, when car bodies became fully enclosed, to the present day. Design, material, manufacturing procedure, and tooling developments are described as they relate to the sealing of windshields and windows, doors, decklids, and hardtop side rails. Materials used in weatherstripping have included natural rubber, SBR (styrene butadiene rubber) and blends, neoprene, EPDM, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), and PVC/uncured nitrile blends. Today, every effort is being made to isolate car occupants from heat, cold, water, and noise.
