USER RESPONSE TO PEDESTRIANISED SHOPPING STREETS

The report is concerned with the behaviour and attitudes of users towards the amenity and design of pedestrian shopping streets. Studies were made of pedestrianised shopping areas in Birmingham, Bolton, Bristol and Herford where shopping streets had been converted from traffic routes. The survey provides a basis for studying the use of pedestrian streets for varying purposes. The use of streets for social contact was shown to vary according to city size with positive views on safety, shopping amenity and preservation of town centres. From evaluations of user attitudes in the following sections - opportunities for pedestrianization; the process of change; site characteristics; user responses; and, policy guidelines - the report attempts to improve policy formulation concerning pedestrianised street design.
