TESTING AND TECHNOLOGY OF MODELS OR INTEGRATED TANKS FOR LNG CARRIERS
This paper describes the design of an integrated membrane system for LNG tankers based on a flexible, thin stainless still primary barrier supported on a rigid balsa wood and plywood insulation and secondary barrier. The primary barrier is similar to that employed on the Pythagore, i.e. with crossed corrugations with specially designed knots at the cross-over points and corners to accommodate thermal contraction and pressure variations due to ship's movements. The selected geometry is described. The insulation and secondary barrier system is that employed on the Methane Pioneer and Methane Progress as a result of experience in the m.v. Findon to support the primary barrier and the methods of attaching the primary barrier will be set out. A fatigue testing philosophy for LNG tanks in general is outlined briefly and the actual testing programme adopted by Le Havre for this particular design are described. (Author Modified)
