A NEW PROCESS FOR THE TRANSPORTATION OF NATURAL GAS

A new process for the transportation of natural gas has been developed. The process is referred to as MLG, which stands for Medium Condition Liquefied Gas. The process has been developed and is owned by Ocean Transport Group of New York City. The process employs mild refrigeration and pressure to achieve an adequate increase in density of the gas to prepare it for transport. When transported by ship, the gas is contained aboard the vessel in a multiplicity of pressure containers rather than a few conventional-type atmospheric tanks. The process has been under development for over 5 years. During this time, work has progressed from the laboratory stage through pilot planning and prototyping. Ship classification societies have reviewed and approved the process and the proposed ship design. Development work was culminated recently with the operation of prototype facilities. A Liberty Ship was modified to incorporate gas containers, and gas processing facilities were constructed on-shore. Loading and unloading operations were performed, and the ship made several voyages with gas cargo loaded aboard. Operations were completely successful. The economics for the process show a significant advantage over the conventional LNG method. This advantage results because the reduction in shore facilities cost for the new process more than offsets an increase in ship cost. A comprehensive program of applying for patents on the many innovations incorporated into the process has been followed. World-wide basic process patents have been issued. The process is now ready for commercial use. (Auther)
