ELECTRONIC CONTROL OF MOTOR-CAR SUBSYSTEMS
This article examines production electronically controlled passenger car sub-systems and briefly discusses the future application of microprocessors. At present the lack of suitable low-cost transducers and actuators inhibits the development of cost effective systems. Electronic ignition systems based on variable reluctance, excitation of a differential transformer or photoelastic concept are the most common. Fuel-injection systems, to improve fuel economy or reduce emissions are described. Two types of system exist, one depending on inlet manifold pressure and the other monitoring air flow to the engine. Anti-lock braking systems based on the detection of wheel deceleration are offerred on some production cars in the USA and Japan. Logic systems have been used to control gear shifting by solenoids. Automatic antiglare headlamp systems, automatic control of headlamp-beam intensity and self-levelling headlamps are described. Alternators require only a voltage regulator to control DC output with variations in speed, load and temperature. Various forms of vehicle control and communication are outlined. Automatic monitoring and display of vehicle parameters, as well as convenience systems such as "cruise control" have been developed. (TRRL)
