THE TREND TOWARDS ENERGY EFFICIENT ENGINES
DER TREND ZU SPARSAMEN MOTOREN
Because of the continuing energy crisis the emphasis in vehicle construction has shifted to energy saving units which emit less exhaust, to cars with lower noise levels, to lighter aerodynamically shaped vehicles and to engines with lower fuel consumption. The article surveys efforts being made by BMW in this direction; as low a number of cylinders as possible, new lightweight injection engines, electronic fuel injection, 5 gear transmission, and the turbo-diesel engine. Work being undertaken by the American car industry is also mentioned. (TRRL)
