FENDER SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS AT OPEN-SEA BERTHS

The oscillation of ships docked or moored at offshore terminals imposes special requirements on the fenders, going beyond the requirement to absorb the docking impact and resist stationary forces. The moored ship is in continuous motion, with large kinetic energy, part of which has to be absorbed by the fender system. Examples of breasting dolphin design are presented, demonstrating practical ways to provide large deflection and high energy absorption.
