PROTECTION AGAINST ROCK FALLS WITH METAL NETS

PROTECTION CONTRE LES EBOULEMENTS ROCHEUX PAR FILETS METALLIQUES

Studies conducted in the field of protection against rock falls have led to the development of a system of steel cable nets which are used in the form of flexible screens installed on a slope to intercept and stop falling rocks through dissipation of their kinetic energy. Tests carried out on experimental polygones have facilitated the determination of the operational characteristics of these braking systems. The braking capacity of metal net screens is high and vastly superior to that of conventional rigid structures (masonry walls, cribs, rail-type screens), and these screens can stop blocks reaching one to several cubic meters. Modular design (5 m-long, 3 m-high units) enables screens of variable length to be erected, which would be adapted to topographic conditions. These screens are easy to erect and to maintain. Their erection is possible on very steep gradients or slopes of difficult access. (TRRL
