PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLE SEGREGATION
Since its designation as a new town in 1946, all the traffic facilities in Stevenage, England, have been designed by the Stevenage Development Corporation on the basis of segregating pedestrians and cyclists from motor vehicles. The population has grown in that period from 6000 to 75000 and 34 km of cycleways have been constructed. Another 4 km are at present being built. The form of the layout is described together with the philosophy underlying the unitary design concept. Reference is also made to the safety record of the new town. (TRRL)
