AAA Electric Vehicle Range Testing: AAA Proprietary Research Into the Effect of Ambient Temperature and HVAC Use on Driving Range and MPGe
This report presents the results of tests examining electric vehicle (EV) driving range and ambient temperature; and the effect of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems on range. In addition, the costs of driving, based on charging costs, with and without HVAC systems engaged is investigated. Five EVs were used in the tests: 2018 BMW i3s, 2018 Chevrolet Bolt, 2018 Nissan Leaf, 2017 Tesla Model S 75D, and 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf. Results are presented for each vehicle's range and energy consumption at 20°F, 75°F, and 95°F. Next, driving range is measured at 20°F, 75°F, and 95°F with the HVAC engaged. The authors hypothesize that EVs with heat pumps will lose less driving range than those with resistive heating. The range results and equivalent fuel economy values are presented for each vehicle. Overall for tests at 20°F and 95°F, HVAC use significantly reduced driving range.
