CONSTRUCTION OF EXPERIMENTAL REINFORCED EARTH WALLS AT THE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY
The broad objective of the TRRL programme is to provide guidance for the design, construction, maintenance and repair of reinforced earth structures under the conditions likely to be encountered in the United Kingdom (UK). Some of the more specific aims are: (a) to optimise the use of the reinforcing in terms of length, spacing and orientation, (b) to investigate the possible use of reinforcements other than those in current use, (c) to make the maximum use of on-site fill materials, (d) to provide data to assist in avoiding problems arising from corrosion or other forms of deterioration of the reinforcements, (e) to develop methods of monitoring performance and repairing reinforced earth structures, and (f) to investigate the possibility of further applications of reinforced earth and other composite soil techniques. The experimental work has followed the usual progression of increasing scale and soil complexity. In scale, the research has ranged from triaxial and shearbox experiments, through static and dynamic model tests to pilot and full scale trials. In soil type, the work has progressed from ideal free draining granular materials to less amenable low plasticity clays. (TRRL)
