COMPARATIVE PAVEMENT TRIALS FOR NEW ZEALAND CONDITIONS

This technical recommendation is written for the pavement practitioner to help him accomplish special pavement evaluation trials. He will find the main limitation is the time he spends, and his greatest help a knowledge of local materials and their characteristics. All roading agencies differ in size and in the expertise they have available, so it follows that their involvement with pavement testing and experimentation will vary also. To deal with these variations, three different levels of performance evaluation are described: (1) study of an existing road system. (2) Evaluation using a typical prototype road. (3) Comparative trials using alternative pavements (test strips). The project objectives are to: (a) define the purpose of pavement comparison tests and how they vary from routine construction work, (b) list the preliminary requirements and detail the sequence of site selection, construction and testing, (c) establish the properties to be measured at each stage and select the performance indicators for the monitoring period, (d) observe the variables which will be encountered and which will require early identification and isolation, (e) establish good start data and records. Guidance is given on the testing intervals and the controls required and guidelines are offered on the frequency and extent of progress reports, through to a satisfactory termination of the study.
