Effectiveness of Walkability Indicator from the perspective of Subjective Evaluation on Streets in Sprawl Urban Areas

The aim of this paper is to clarify the effectiveness of the walkability indicator from the perspective of subjective evaluation on streets in sprawl urban areas. For the purpose, the method of this paper is geographic information system (GIS) survey in North Osaka Metropolitan Region, the questionnaire survey in Ibaraki City and the walking survey in the case of South Ibaraki Route as representative sprawl urban areas. As a result, it developed the walkability indicator; they are Access & Linkage, Comfort & Image, Uses & Activity, and Sociability. By the indicator, the result shows that people who live in density areas evaluate “Sociability” for green streets, people who live in sprawl areas evaluate “Comfort & Image” for narrower streets. Based on the subjective evaluation, they suggest that residents want to the designs of making good relationships between walking and cycling for improving the walkability. In conclusion, this paper clarifies effectiveness of the subjective walkability indicator from the perspective of residents’ consciousness.
