A STUDY OF EPOXY RESIN ADHESIVE JOINTS IN SHEAR THE USA. STRENGTHENING, MAINTENANCE, REPAIR OF PAVEMENTS
The structural performance of four epoxy adhesives has been studied, when subjected to shear in three types of specimen: a steel-steel double-lap specimen, a concrete prism with scarfed joint, and a concrete beam with external steel plate reinforcement. Specimens have been tested under simple and sustained static load, and in fatigue. Cured between 20 deg C and 80 deg C, the shear strength of adhesion to steel was generally at least 13 n/mm2, provided that the steel was free from grease, and was not greatly affected by slight contamination with rust, dust or moisture, or by cycling 400 times between -7 deg C and +35 deg C. There was a marked difference in performance of the different adhesives after immersion in water for 8 weeks. All adhesives survived ten million cycles of stress range of at least 4.5 n/mm2. Beams failed in a ductile manner, with yielding of the steel plate, provided the mean thickness of adhesive was at least 1 mm.(a) (TRRL) very dry micro-concrete with a high cement content on the old concrete which has been sanded and impregnated with cement grout. This report was presented at the training seminar of the ecole nationale des ponts et chaussees: "rigid pavements, present and future", 22-23 November, 1978.
