SELCALL APPLICATIONS: THE KEY TO ADVANCED MARINE COMMUNICATIONS
This paper treats the related and equally important area of SELCALL applications, particularly at VHF. SELCALL is, first and foremost, a digital contacting system but because of its development to serve the diverse needs of a multinational maritime community, it can provide a very versatile means for both telecontrol and telecommunication service. The implications of this capability to serve marine communications and navigation in the more densely populated coastal waters, rivers and ports are only now beginning to be appreciated. A description of the SELCALL message structure and spectrum requirements for use at VHF/UHF is given in this paper together with several important applications to marine communications, navigation and traffic management.
