CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY - VOLUME 1 - PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS. 4TH EDITION
Since the publication of the third edition of this work there have been a number of important advances in this field of concrete technology which have been incorporated into this edition. The book begins with a comprehensive review of the kinds of cement and their properties, including an examination of high alumina cement, which deals with the most important points raised by recent controversies surrounding this subject. An extended review of aggregates and additives is given in chapters 2 and 3, which is followed by a widely revised chapter concerning lightweight concrete. In addition to the topics covered in the previous edition, sections have been included which deal with polystyrene as a lightweight concrete, the effect of aggregate shape, mechanical foaming combined with aluminium powder, creep shrinkage, thermal expansion and the shock absorption characteristics of lightweight concrete. It is in chapter 5, which deals with concrete mix design and quality control, that one of the more important recent advances has been incorporated. This concerns new methods of mix design based on proportions given in kilograms per cubic metre of wet concrete. Both chapters 6 and 7, which deal with the properties of cement and concrete, and deterioration due to chemical attack respectively, have been expanded and extended in many aspects. The most important latest information has been incorporated in this edition, which is now fully metricated and includes relevant conversion factors. (TRRL)
