STATE-OF-THE-ART REPORT ON CONCRETE GUIDEWAYS

This state-of-the-art report covers concrete guideways for passenger transit systems, the guideway being the structure that supports and guides the transit vehicle. The differences in the requirements for elevated guideways compared to conventional bridges are explained. The historical development of guideways is reviewed and details given of current North American systems in the categories of automated guideway transit, heavy rail transit, and experimental transit. A design rationale is developed for elevated guideway design. Existing design criteria for six steel wheeled systems and six rubber tired systems are compared. Work in progress is described covering the development of new transit systems and research on concrete guideways. The appendix presents technical data and approximate costs for nine existing guideway systems. The references section and bibliography together list 135 papers on the subject.
