SPAIN GEARING UP FOR CONTAINERIZED CARGO
The majority of Spanish ports are in the process of adapting to container traffic among them Algeciras which, in 1976, was selected by two major operators as their US/Middle East service. Since then, Algeciras has handled 90,000 containers, but congestion has promoted plans for enlarging capacity to 200,000 containers. With government encouragement, other container terminals are being expanded at Cadiz, Huelva, Alicante, Barcelona and Pasajes, where developments are described. The author states that containerisation has been the mainspring of port changes; over the past decade container movements in Spanish ports have grown from virtually zero to over 700,000 and the trend will continue. As Spain progresses towards membership of the EEC, containerisation has been seen as a heaven-sent boon, but bureaucratic red tape is in danger of impeding its benefits. The Spanish merchant marine now includes 60 containerships totalling 128,000 g.r.t., the larger proportion less than five years old -- an impressive reflection of the growth of containerisation in the Iberian peninsula.
