HERMES-THE UIC TRANSMISSION NETWORK

In 1972, the Board of Management of the International Union of Railways decided to create a new Committee, the eleventh, with the responsibility of coordinating and orientating the information processing studies of all the European railways. The Information Processing Committee drew up a program of work on the basis of questions which had been covered by previous studies. The subjects which, during the last four years or more, have given rise to important proposals or decisions include the standardization of messages for passenger and freight traffic, the electronic reservation of accommodation, and coding. The Committee was concerned with one problem: Was it advisable to create a telecommunications network between the railway administrations, capable of transferring information between the existing information processing systems?
