SECONDARY BRAKING SYSTEMS IN TRUCKS

This report deals with an investigation concerning the braking capacity of trucks if a failure occurs somewhere in the normal service brake. The purpose of the research was to get an insight into various secondary braking systems for trucks. Practical tests were carried out with a tractor-semi trailer combination. The performance of various split braking systems as well as spring brake actuators in terms of deceleration and lateral stability are shown. It was found that with nearly all of the secondary braking systems it was possible to obtain sufficient deceleration to meet the legal requirements for braking criteria. The critical point however is the lateral stability. The report concludes with recommendations for requirements for secondary braking systems concerning as the Ford Proco and Texaso Controlled Combustion System (TCCS). Another development is the may "Fireball" combustion chamber which allows engines to run on high compression ratios and on very lean mixtures on part throttle. (TRRL)
