MEASUREMENT OF FUEL CONSUMPTION ON RURAL ROADS. EFFECT STUDIES IN DIFFERENT ROAD AND TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

Fuel-consumption of motor-vehicles was examined in different road and traffic conditions. Field-measurements with a car on rural roads has resulted in connections between fuel-consumption and the following variables: speed, gradient, horizontal curvature, wearing course and queue position. For lorries the effect of gradient on fuel consumption was examined by means of a calculation-model. The model was used for calculating fuel consumption for various weight, speed and gradient. (TRRL) located in sites which have been extensively modified, those modifications being the result not only of natural phenomena but also of man-made interventions. This article describes a geotechnical study of this type; study of the difficulties encountered in a section of the a15 motorway in the northern suburbs of Paris. This study illustrates some layout problems resulting from the presence of gypsum-bearing sites. Details are given of the geology of the site, survey procedures dictated by the geometric characteristics and complex geotechnical nature of the site. Construction problems and provisions are outlined.
