VERTICAL CAPILLARY SCREENS: AN EFFECTIVE METHOD OF PREVENTING THE EDGE EFFECT, OPERATION, DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION

DES ECRANS CAPILLAIRES VERTICAUX: MOYEN D'ACTION EFFICACE CONTRE L'EFFET DE BORD, FONCTIONNEMENT, CONCEPTION, REALISATION

After giving a definition of the edge effect and its danger, the author discusses preventive measures, among others the vertical capillary screen which is in fact a narrow trench filled with materials (sand) of even coarse grading offering some capillary characteristics such as a rapid decrease in suction at a given degree of saturation and high permeability. Attention is drawn to the criteria of material selection for screens, to the design itself of the screens and to the study of various practical problems of installation. (TRRL)
